12-week study plan
Study plan
Level III builds on Levels I and II, so confirm those are solid first. This plan assumes about 8 hours a week and several years of field and project experience. The Level III exam leans on judgment: reviewing a shop drawing, deciding which code governs, managing a project or a crew. Practice by explaining why each wrong option is wrong.
The rule of the plan: for every chapter read the code sections cited in the explanations, practice the bank in study mode until you are above 80%, and every three weeks take a fixed practice exam on the clock.
| Week | What to study | Practice on this site |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Read “About the exam”. Get the printed NFPA 72 (2022), NFPA 70 (2020), IBC (2021) and NFPA 101 (2021) and set up your tab system. | Practice Exam 1 as a baseline. |
| 1–3 | Shop drawings and submittals: NFPA 72 Chapter 7 documentation, calculations, layout checks, AHJ review. This single task is the largest part of the exam. | Shop Drawings and Submittals bank. |
| 4–5 | NFPA 101 (2021) and IBC (2021): fire alarm requirements by occupancy, egress concepts, which code governs. | Life Safety Code and Building Code Applications bank. Practice Exam 2. |
| 6–7 | Supervising installation, commissioning and close-out: submittal release, field changes, acceptance testing, as-builts, record of completion. | Supervising Installation bank. |
| 8 | Managing periodic testing and records: building an ITM program, forms, retention. | Managing Testing bank. |
| 9 | Impairments and deficiencies at the management level: roles, notifications, mitigation, escalation. | Resolving Impairments bank. Practice Exam 3. |
| 10–11 | Management and supervision: scheduling, cost control, contracts, safety, training and mentoring, the NICET Code of Ethics. | Supervision, Project Management and Professional Conduct bank. |
| 12 | Review your misses, finish tabbing all four books, and rehearse the two-pass strategy on a full timed exam. | Smart review daily and a full exam on the clock. If you are above 80%, schedule. |
Do not memorize letters. Options are shuffled on every attempt. Know where the answer is in the book and why the other options fail.
